Giants acquire infielder Kevin Padlo in trade with Mariners

SAN FRANCISCO -- Monday night's game in Milwaukee provided the latest reminder of how significant minor roster moves can ultimately be. Luis Gonzalez, picked up on a waiver claim last August, hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning, stunning the Brewers and capping a huge road trip for the Giants.

A day later, the Giants added another depth piece.

Just before first pitch on Tuesday, infielder Kevin Padlo was acquired from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. Padlo checks off many of the boxes that other additions have over the last three years.

The 25-year-old is a former high-round pick, having been taken in the fifth round by the Colorado Rockies in 2014. He has a high on-base percentage in the minors -- .350 in eight seasons -- and has hit for more power than most recent Giants additions. Padlo hit 20 homers in 95 Triple-A games last year for the Tampa Bay Rays and Mariners. He hit 21 homers across two levels in 2019.

Padlo has primarily been a third baseman but he has limited experience at first in both the minors and majors. He has played 10 career big league games and is 1-for-15 with a double and two walks.

Two years after he was drafted by the Rockies, Padlo was dealt to the Rays in a move that sent Jake McGee and German Marquez to Colorado. He was DFA'd by the Rays last August and claimed by the Mariners, who DFA'd him last week.
