The Giants made a minor move Sunday morning that could provide important depth down the line.
Infielder Thairo Estrada was acquired for cash considerations from the Yankees four days after he was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Rougned Odor. Estrada hasn't hit particularly well at the big league level, but has 225 minor league appearances at shortstop, filling an organizational need.
The Giants have very little upper-level depth at the position behind starter Brandon Crawford and backup Mauricio Dubon, who also is their main center fielder. Arismendy Alcantara was the next man up if something happened at the big league level. The Giants do have top prospects Marco Luciano and Will Wilson in the system, but both are viewed as at least a year away from being ready.

"We were able to get some really strong makeup reports on Estrada," manager Gabe Kapler said. "We know he can run, we know he's got a really good arm and he provides depth and is a potential utility player for us."

Estrada also can play second, third or the outfield. For now, he will report to the club's alternate site in Sacramento. Formerly a pretty highly-regarded prospect, Estrada has hit just .214 in 61 big league games for the Yankees. The 25-year-old has a .280/.337/.389 career slash line in the minor leagues.
To clear a spot on their own 40-man roster, the Giants put outfielder Jaylin Davis on the 60-day IL with left knee patella tendinitis. The knee was bothering Davis this spring and he has not played in alternate site scrimmages being held with the A's.
