SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants have had plenty of success this season signing veterans as Triple-A depth and then eventually plugging them into their big league outfield. Now, they're trying to do that with the infield.
The club signed infielder Cristhian Adames, Triple-A Sacramento announced Friday. Adames, who has spent parts of four seasons in the majors with the Colorado Rockies, was added to the River Cats' roster.
The 27-year-old was released by the Chicago Cubs last Friday after playing just 12 games for their Triple-A club. He last played in the big leagues in 2017 and has 306 at-bats across four MLB seasons, batting .206 with two homers and four triples.

Adames is a career .288/.342/.386 hitter at Triple-A and brings the defensive versatility the Giants crave. He primarily has been a shortstop in the minors but also has plenty of experience at second and third.
The Giants are particularly thin at the middle infield spots in the upper levels of the minors. They have had plenty of success with Donovan Solano, but could use additional help in Triple-A. Adames seems a good fit for that role, although with the way things have gone recently, you can never put a ceiling on a depth addition. Alex Dickerson, Mike Yastrzemski and Solano were all at Triple-A before earning a real shot with the big league club.
