Crawford sad, but not shocked by Posey's retirement

Brandon Crawford has been Buster Posey's teammate on the Giants for the past 11 seasons, helping bring two World Series titles back to the Bay Area in 2012 and 2014.

In an exclusive sit-down with NBC Sports Bay Area's Laura Britt, Crawford revealed that he was among a group that learned of Posey's plans to retire about a week before the news first was reported. Crawford spoke about his emotions upon learning of the longtime catcher's plans.

"I'm sad, obviously we all know what kind of baseball player he is, but he was a friend. We were drafted and signed pretty much I think the same day back in 2008. So we go back a little ways, and obviously played together a long time, so we've become pretty good friends. I'll definitely miss seeing him every day throughout the course of the season, obviously still stay in touch and everything, but we won't see each other as much, so that part makes me sad."

After sitting out the shortened 2020 season to spend more time with his family during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Posey returned and put together an impressive bounceback season in 2021. Crawford said that the news of Posey's retirement did not come out of nowhere given the conversations the two had during the season.

"I don't know if it was a total shock just from conversations we've had and knowing how he feels about being able to be at home and be a dad. The older twins are 10 now, and then he has the baby twins that I'm sure he wants to be at home for and be a dad, just based on conversations we've had this year, I'm not completely surprised but I think I definitely wanted him to be around at least a couple more years."

Crawford and Posey were part of a magical run in franchise history, and both surely will one day see their numbers immortalized at Oracle Park.

Giants fans across the world likely feel the same things Crawford is, but Posey's legacy in San Francisco is unvarnished.
