Chris Shaw, an outfielder who hit 24 homers in Triple-A this season, has been called up, sources told NBC Sports Bay Area. Shaw, the organization's first-round pick in 2015, was not thought to be in the original September call-up plans, but the Giants can now give him a 27-game audition with so much playing time cleared in the outfield.
Shaw was drafted as a first baseman but has been turned into a left fielder. With McCutchen traded to the Yankees and Steven Duggar done for the season, the Giants can give Austin Slater and Gorkys Hernandez most of the playing time in right and center, and let Shaw debut in left.
Shaw, 24, has back-to-back 24-homer season in the minors. He hit .259 with the River Cats with a .308 on-base percentage and .505 slugging percentage. Shaw struck out 144 times and still has to shore up that part of his game, but the Giants are sorely lacking in power, and he should provide that in September.
Scouts who have seen Shaw in the outfield recently say he's much improved defensively.
