This season just became that much more important for the Giants.

Ron Wotus announced Tuesday that the 2021 season will be his final year serving a full-time role as a Giants coach. Wotus is the longest-tenured coach in San Francisco Giants history. He has 34 years with the organization to his name.

“It’s been the privilege of my life to work 34 years for the greatest organization in baseball,” Wotus said through a team statement. “I never imagined I’d have the career I’ve had -- coaching in four World Series, coaching homegrown players like Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and so many others, and watching them develop into the best players they can be. They are why you coach."

Crawford reacted to the news with a goat emoji on Twitter, showing his love and admiration for his longtime coach.

"It’s time for a bit more balance in my life. My wife, Laurie, and my family have been there for me through all the ups and downs, all the travel and long hours, and now I want to be there for them. I am so grateful to so many people: My general managers -- Bobby Evans, Farhan Zaidi, Scott Harris and a special thank you to Brian Sabean, who gave me my start as a major league coach with the Giants; my managers -- Dusty Baker, Felipe Alou, Bruce Bochy and Gabe Kapler; all my fellow coaches; Giants ownership and Larry Baer; and, of course, the hundreds of players who have come through that clubhouse door over the years. I’ve learned from all of them.

"Lastly, a huge thank you to the incredible Giants fans who energized me every game.”

Wotus was a Giants minor league manager from 1991 through 1997. He became the Giants' third base coach in 1998 and served as a bench coach from 1999 through 2017. Since 2018, he has been San Francisco's third base coach and has played a vital role in coaching infielders for a large portion of his time with the Giants.

“We are all very grateful for Ron’s contributions to the Giants -- both on and off the field,” Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said. “Ron has made a lasting impact on a countless number of players during his 34 years and his dedication to his craft is second to none.

"It has been an honor to have Ron coach in San Francisco for over two decades and we know the entire Giants fan base joins us in wishing him the best.”
