Giants' Gabe Kapler posts strong support for Black Lives Matter movement

Giants manager Gabe Kapler posted a lengthy message on his Instagram story Monday morning, supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and pledging to encourage the clubhouse to have a "difficult conversation" about privilege and inequality.

Kapler has been active on social media since the death of George Floyd in police custody led to protests across the country, regularly retweeting other messages in support of the movement and twice posting to his Instagram page. On Sunday, he posted a picture of the Oracle Park scoreboard, which read, "Black Lives Matter." In his Instagram story Monday, Kapler wrote in part, "White men are privileged. White men in leadership positions like the one I hold are more so."

Several of Kapler's players and coaches have been outspoken on social media over the last couple of weeks, most notably outfielder Hunter Pence and reliever Trevor Gott. Bench coach Kai Correa has also been particularly active in supporting the movement and relaying his own experiences.

As an organization, the Giants recently had a Zoom call to discuss the developments and promote listening. Larry Baer said on KNBR last week that the call was "extremely powerful."

Kapler has not managed his first game with the Giants yet, but already he has shown a willingness to join other local coaches like Steve Kerr and Kyle Shanahan in amplifying causes. After not tweeting for a full year, Kapler has in recent months expressed his support for local food banks, frontline healthcare workers and financial equality for women.
