What we learned from Giants' walk-off win over D-backs

Madison Bumgarner got the biggest ovation of the night, but it was his old friends who once again walked away with the win.

This one was way tougher than the Giants would have expected, but in the end, it was their 13th win in 15 games against the Arizona Diamondbacks this season. The Giants won 8-7, scoring the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when first baseman Christian Walker made his second error of the inning.

The Giants took a big early lead and then watched Alex Wood's promising start dissipate in the span of just a few minutes. The Diamondbacks scored five runs off the lefty in the fifth, quieting a raucous Oracle Park and tying the game.

It looked like they would do even more damage in the eighth when Nick Ahmed and Ketel Marte led off with back-to-back singles off Tyler Rogers, but Ahmed tried to take third and was cut down by Mike Yastrzemski, who has shifted over to center field in recent days.

That left this one up to the Diamondbacks bullpen, and that's usually good news for the Giants. Taylor Clarke, who ignited last week's historic four-run rally, walked Buster Posey to open the eighth. Posey came all the way around from first to score on Brandon Crawford's double, and the Giants tacked on another run when reliever Sean Poppen tried to pick off Yastrzemski and threw it down the line.

Nothing on this night came easy, and closer Jake McGee immediately ran into trouble in the ninth. Two singles and two walks brought one run across and Nick Ahmed tied it with a sacrifice fly to left. McGee had not allowed an earned run since May 30, but he was pulled with two outs after throwing 26 pitches.

LaMonte Wade Jr. reached on an error by Walker to lead off the ninth and went to second on Brandon Belt's groundout. With two outs and Wade on third, Kris Bryant hit a sharp grounder to first that Walker couldn't handle. Wade sailed home for the winning run.

#FullSquad

This was the first time the Giants showed off their new depth in a home game. Kris Bryant did make his debut on the final day of the last homestand, but Belt and Tommy La Stella didn't come off the IL until a few days later. The first look was very, very impressive.

Belt hit a ringing one-out double in the first to get the Giants going. After a Posey walk and another out, Bryant roped a double down the left field line. Yastrzemski followed with the third double of the inning, making it 3-0. Alex Dickerson has hit in the heart of the order for a lot of his Giants career, but he's batting seventh now and he lined a single up the middle to tack on a fourth run.

After all that, Zac Gallen got to the No. 8 hitter, Tommy La Stella, who also hits leadoff sometimes. La Stella fouled off a couple of two-strike pitches to wear Gallen out a bit more before finally ending the inning with a groundout.

Gallen walked off the field with his head down, having allowed four runs and thrown 23 pitches, but he recovered. The Giants hit a few more balls hard, but Gallen allowed just one more run and left after six innings -- and 101 pitches -- with the score tied.

That Escalated Quickly

Wood retired the first 10 Diamondbacks he faced and was absolutely cruising until the sixth when the Diamondbacks stunned him with a five-run rally that started with Gallen's double to left-center.

That was followed by two more doubles, and Carson Kelly hit a triple to right-center that brought the third run across. Before the Giants could even contemplate their next move, Asdrubal Cabrera crushed a hanging slider into the home bullpen to tie the game.

The entire inning lasted just 13 pitches. The five-run rally consisted of just nine pitches. Before Gabe Kapler could get a reliever loose, the Diamondbacks had wiped out the entire deficit.

Buster Bash

Before the implosion, Posey extended the lead with a solo shot to dead center. It was another one of those balls that kept carrying and carrying, something Posey just didn't see in prior seasons. His 14 homers are his most since 2016 and he has a legitimate shot to get to 20 for the first time since 2014.

Speaking of 2014, Posey appeared to look at the visiting dugout for Bumgarner as he rounded third:
