Giants place Buster on 10-day IL; will miss All-Star Game

The Giants got good news Sunday night when Buster Posey’s X-ray came back negative, but Posey ultimately ended up on the Injured List anyway.

Posey was placed on the 10-day IL with a left thumb contusion and right-hander Logan Webb was added to the active roster to start Friday against the Washington Nationals. Posey hasn’t played since taking a foul tip off his glove hand and coming out of Sunday’s game. He said he feared he had suffered a fracture that night, but multiple scans -- including an MRI on Wednesday -- have confirmed a bone bruise. Still, the bruise has been slow to heal.

“I couldn’t catch and swing a bat right now,” Posey said. “That’s just the reality of it.”

The move officially knocks Posey out of Tuesday’s All-Star Game, although it is backdated to July 6 so Posey can possibly return next Friday for the start of the second half in St. Louis. Manager Gabe Kapler said that's the hope right now, saying putting Posey on the IL was the right move to make and the focus right now is on getting him ready to contribute in the second half.

Posey said his family won’t travel to Denver as planned after he was voted in as a starter for the All-Star Game.

“I’m obviously disappointed,” he said. “It’s an honor to play in the game. My two oldest (children) were pretty excited to go but these things happen.”

The Giants needed to add Webb on Friday, but their top catching prospect could start in Posey’s place at some point this weekend. Joey Bart was at Oracle Park on Friday as a member of the taxi squad, but could be active Saturday.

Bart was the everyday catcher for most of last season, but the Giants signed Curt Casali over the winter to allow Bart to get more time in the minors. The results so far are encouraging. In 150 plate appearances for Triple-A Sacramento, Bart has a .338/.400/.581 slash line with eight homers and nine doubles.
