Giants place Tomlinson on DL, add INF Pena; Romo to 60-day

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants are now without both of their backup infielders. Kelby Tomlinson was put on the disabled list with a sprained left thumb, which happened on a diving play in the seventh inning Wednesday against the Red Sox. The Giants were already playing without Ehire Adrianza, who has a fractured foot and is on the 60-day DL.

Ramiro Pena, a 30-year-old infielder, had his contract purchased from Triple-A Sacramento and was at the ballpark Friday afternoon for the first game of a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Pena batted .304 with nine doubles, one triple and four homers for the River Cats.

He is a switch-hitter who is known for his defensive versatility. Pena, who was in big league camp this spring, hasn't appeared in the Majors since 2014 when he played with the Atlanta Braves.

Tomlinson had been hot at the plate, raising his average to .289 with a .379 on-base percentage. He was the backup at both middle infield spots and was expected to get additional time in left field because of injuries to Angel Pagan and Hunter Pence.

To clear a 40-man roster spot for Pena, the Giants put right-hander Sergio Romo on the 60-day disabled list. Romo is not close to a rehab assignment after having a setback while playing for the River Cats. He has been limited to light games of catch in recent days.
