The Giants are taking a flier on another former Red Sox player.

Casey Kelly, Boston's first-round pick in 2008, has signed a minor league contract with the Giants.

The club announced that Kelly has been assigned to Triple-A Sacramento.

Kelly, Baseball America's No. 31 overall prospect in the minors following the 2010 season, was traded that winter to San Diego in a deal that brought Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox.

The 27-year-old Kelly made it to the big leagues with the Padres in 2012 and 2015. After the 2015 season, he was traded to Atlanta. In 19 career major league appearances, Kelly has a 6.39 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 62 innings.

This season, Kelly had been pitching for the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate in Iowa primarily as a starter. In 60 innings, Kelly posted a 4.65 ERA with 43 strikeouts.

Kelly was drafted as a pitcher and a shortstop. Boston let him hit during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, but made him a pitcher full-time in 2010.
