The Giants signed free-agent pitcher Anthony DeSclafani to a one-year, $6 million contract on Wednesday, the team announced.
DeSclafani also can make an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses for innings pitched: $62,500 each for 140 innings, 160 innings, 180 innings and 200 innings, the Giants said in a press release.
The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser first reported DeSclafani and the Giants were close to a deal.

DeSclafani, 30, went 1-2 with a 7.22 ERA last season over nine appearances for the Cincinnati Reds, making seven starts. He struck out 25 batters in 33 2/3 innings and struggled with command, walking 16 and averaging a career-high 4.3 walks per nine innings. His 6.7 strikeouts per nine innings were the lowest of his career.
But DeSclafani's fastball velocity was in the 78th-percentile this year, according to Baseball Savant. The right-hander has five-pitch mix -- fastball, slider, sinker, curveball and changeup -- but mostly relies on his slider, fastball and sinker.

While the six-year veteran had a down season in 2020, 2019 might have been the best season of his career. DeSclafani tied a career-high with nine wins over 31 starts with the Reds, and his 3.89 ERA was the second-best of his career. He also struck out a career-best 167 batters in 166 2/3 innings, which were the second-most of his career.

Starting pitching was the Giants' biggest need this offseason. They brought back Kevin Gausman on the qualifying offer, and added DeSclafani for 2021. This surely won't be their last move looking to strengthen the rotation.
