Giants starters finish off historically awful month with Drew Pomeranz dud

BALTIMORE -- Drew Pomeranz's eight-run outing on Friday was a bit stunning given how quickly he gave back a 5-0 lead. But it was also par for the course for Giants starters in the month of May.

The starting staff just finished the worst month in San Francisco Giants history, posting a 7.32 ERA that was the highest in any single month since the franchise moved to San Francisco in 1958. It was the highest monthly ERA by a starting staff since A's starters had an 8.25 over the final month of the 2015 season.

Pomeranz was the main culprit, allowing 22 runs in 10 1/3 innings, but nobody was immune as Giants starters gave up 96 earned runs over 118 innings. Jeff Samardzija had a 5.55 ERA in five starts, Derek Holland and Dereck Rodriguez got knocked out of the rotation and call-ups like Tyler Beede, Shaun Anderson and Andrew Suarez battled inconsistency. Madison Bumgarner had a solid 3.72 but that's still well above his career average. Even the opener, Nick Vincent, gave up three runs in his lone start.

Going into the season, the starters were supposed to be a relatively solid group, and they posted a 4.13 ERA in March and April. But in 26 May games, the starters allowed opponents to hit .315 with a .966 OPS. Kris Bryant currently ranks ninth in the National League with a .965 OPS.
