Giants swap third basemen, activate familiar face

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants swapped third baseman before the final series of the first half.

Conor Gillaspie was activated from the disabled list, where he has spent most of the past two months dealing with back issues. Rookie Ryder Jones was placed on the disabled list with a right wrist contusion, suffered on the last road trip.

Gillaspie has played just two games since May 10 and has spent time shuttling back and forth between San Jose and Sacramento on rehab assignments. He was in San Jose this week and said his back feels much better after an injection.

Jones hasn't played since July 1. He tried to take swings on Friday and said there's still some pain in his wrist. It's possible -- likely, even -- the Giants send Jones back to Sacramento when he's deemed healthy. Eduardo Nuñez (hamstring) will come off the DL next Friday when the second half starts, so the Giants will have Nuñez, Gillaspie and Jae-Gyun Hwang as options at third base.
