Giants take second chance on Humphreys after trade last year

The Giants felt pretty good about getting prospect Jordan Humphreys from the New York Mets last summer when they didn't have a roster spot for Billy Hamilton. They apparently still like the 24-year-old right-hander.

The Giants claimed Humphreys on waivers Friday, a couple of days after the Cleveland Indians designated him for assignment. The Indians had claimed Humphreys in November when the Giants DFA'd him to clear a roster spot ahead of the Rule 5 Draft.

Humphreys never pitched for the Giants or at their alternate site last summer after the Hamilton trade because he was immediately placed on the restricted list with an undisclosed family issue. At the time of the deal, he was the Mets' No. 14 prospect.

"He was a strike-thrower and a real prospect for the Mets, and we're excited to have him," manager Gabe Kapler said last summer.

To open up a 40-man roster spot the Giants put right-hander Tyler Beede on the 60-day injured list. That's notable because it means Beede, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, won't be eligible to join the big league roster until May 31. He's throwing bullpen sessions in camp right now but won't pitch in a Cactus League game and the Giants have been aiming for a May/June return.

The Giants also announced that right-hander Trevor Gott, DFA'd last weekend to clear a roster spot for Aaron Sanchez, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento's roster. Gott will remain in camp as a non-roster invitee. When the Giants put him on waivers, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said the club hoped to have Gott back in camp.

"If we are able to keep Trevor in the organization we have some things that we're hoping that we can work with him on to kind of get him back on track," Zaidi said. "The first half of 2019, he did a tremendous job for us, and we feel like there's still a chance to get him back to that level."
