Giants top hitting prospects playing in Fall League, Winter League

SAN DIEGO -- With 40-man roster complications holding them back, the Giants do not expect a particularly prospect-filled group to arrive in September. But their Arizona Fall League list contains plenty of potential star power.

The Giants added another top prospect to the Scottsdale Scorpions roster on Wednesday, with left fielder Chris Shaw joining four previously named participants. Shaw will team with Tyler Beede, the organization's top pitching prospect, Steven Duggar, Aramis Garcia, and Tyler Cyr. Two more pitchers will join the team, and the organization hopes one of them is right-hander Joan Gregorio, who lost months of his season to a suspension.

Shaw, 23, has an organization-leading 22 homers across two levels this season. He is hitting .290 since a promotion to Triple-A Sacramento, with 16 homers and 24 doubles in 82 games. Shaw should be in the outfield mix as soon as next spring, and he is being sent to the Fall League in part to work on his defense.

"He'll get more reps in left field," general manager Bobby Evans said. "He's had a long year but hopefully he benefits from this."

Shaw will join a roster that already has five outfielders, but the Giants are hopeful that his power bat keeps him in the lineup on a consistent basis.

In other offseason news, Christian Arroyo will play for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League. The Giants have long had this planned for Arroyo, who lost most of his second half to a hand injury, but the deal was held up by a quirk of international rules.

Because Arroyo has some Puerto Rican heritage, he was previously drafted by a team in the Puerto Rican winter league. The Giants wanted him to play in the Dominican because the pitching is a better challenge there, but a deal had to be worked out between the team in Puerto Rico that somehow held his rights and the team in the Dominican. The Giants have been told the two winter ball teams came to an agreement.
