Giants trade catcher Cameron Rupp to Tigers for cash considerations

The Giants continued their spring cleaning with more roster shuffling on Friday.

Catcher Cameron Rupp has been traded to the Tigers, the team announced. In return, the Giants are receiving cash considerations from Detroit.

Rupp, 30, was signed by the Giants to a minor-league contract in December to compete for the Giants' backup job behind the plate. In six spring training games, he went 3-for-10 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Those numbers are solid in a small sample size, but the Giants clearly like what they have seen from veterans Stephen Vogt and Rene Rivera. Plus, Aramis Garcia is a young option the team will give a long look.

Buster Posey is obviously still the Giants' everyday catcher. The need to keep him healthy, however, makes the competition to be his backup one to keep your eyes on the rest of the spring.
