Giants acquire former top 100 prospect Banda from Rays

The Giants weren't involved in the day's biggest headlines, but they did manage to sneak a deal in before Monday's MLB trade deadline.

The club acquired Rays left-hander Anthony Banda in exchange for cash considerations. To clear a roster spot, Joey Rickard was put on the 45-day IL with left elbow inflammation, ending his season.

Banda was a top 100 prospect three years ago, but had Tommy John surgery in 2018 and hasn't gotten back to form since. Banda made 13 minor league appearances last year upon returning and had a 5.94 ERA, with walks and homers being his primary issues. Banda made four appearances for the Rays this summer, allowing eight earned runs in seven innings.

Like many Zaidi additions, though, Banda has an intriguing background. He has a 3.90 ERA in the minors overall and was pitching well as a Triple-A starter in 2018 before getting hurt. He was designated for assignment by the Rays on Sunday.
