Giants trade pitcher Derek Holland to Cubs for cash considerations

SAN DIEGO -- Few players in the Giants clubhouse had more faith in this year's roster than Derek Holland. Now the lefty will suit up for a team that's been a contender all along.

The Giants on Friday traded Holland and cash considerations to the Chicago Cubs for different cash considerations. It was unclear how much cash went back and forth, but Holland was owed the remainder of his $7 million contract, signed in January. The Giants had designated Holland for assignment over the weekend.

In Holland, the Cubs get a versatile left-hander who has experience as a starter, long reliever or short-stint lefty. While Holland had a 5.90 ERA overall for the Giants, he held lefties to a .471 OPS before he was let go. That will help a Cubs bullpen that needed left-handed depth.

The Giants have filled the hole with Drew Pomeranz, another veteran lefty who moved from the rotation to the bullpen. Pomeranz has been impressive in his first two relief outings, pitching shutout ball while sitting 95-96 mph. Rookie Conner Menez is lined up to return to the rotation when the Giants need a fifth starter next weekend.
