Davis' dad, Dodgers fan, jokes wearing Giants jersey ‘burns' him

J.D. Davis getting traded to the Giants put his father, Jonathan, in an awkward position.

The elder Davis grew up in Southern California and was a big fan of the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Since joining the team, Davis has brought his father out to catch a Giants game, but he's still not wearing the team's orange-and-black memorabilia. Comfortably, anyway.

"He does play little jokes and everything, about wearing a Giants hat or jersey and saying it burns him like the wicked witch with the water or something like that," Davis told NBC Sports Bay Area's Laura Britt. "He’s just messing around.

"We’ll get him the jersey. Absolutely. As long as it has 'Davis' on the back and it’s his son, he don’t care. He’s pretty excited. He’s come down probably every weekend, or every three or four series so far. He loves it."

Entering Thursday’s series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Davis was batting .364/.447/758 over 12 games with the Giants. Four of his 12 hits were home runs, including a solo shot Wednesday night at Oracle Park.

Having Davis don a Giants uniform was something that his father was often teased about leading up to his big league career.

"It was that inside joke growing up in Elk Grove and throughout college going back home to Elk Grove and speaking with the same family and friends that were Giants fans," Davis said. "They were always saying that, 'Karma will get you in full circle. You always make fun of the Giants; your son is going to wear a Giants jersey. When that happens, you have got to wear it.'

"My dad’s like, ‘No way, it’s not going to happen.’ "

Jokes aside, Davis is thrilled to be slugging in the Bay.

"He's loving it," Davis said. "I’m ecstatic, and I feel blessed being here."
