Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan died at his Danville home Sunday night, a family spokesman told the Associated Press on Monday morning. He was 77 years old.
The cause of death is unknown at this time, but Morgan has dealt with a handful of health issues including Myelodysplastic syndromes, a form of bone cancer that would leave him predisposed to leukemia.
Morgan was raised in Oakland and starred at Castlemont High School. Considered as one of the Bay Area's greatest athletes of all time, the 5-foot-7 second baseman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990. He was a two-time NL MVP, won two World Series, five Gold Glove awards, one Silver Slugger and was a 10-time All-Star.

While Morgan starred on the "Big Red Machine" Cincinnati Reds from 1972-79, where he made eight straight All-Star Games, he also played two seasons with the Giants in 1981 and '82, and came home to finish his career with the A's in 1984.
Morgan won his only Silver Slugger in 1982, his second year with the Giants, when he hit .289 with 14 home runs and stole 24 bases at 38 years old.
