Sloppy Giants shut out by D-backs in fifth straight loss

A change of scenery didn't help the Giants on Monday night as they dropped their fifth straight game, losing 7-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The loss drops the Giants back to the .500 mark at 48-48.

Coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers to begin the second half, the Giants didn't have a baserunner against D-backs starter Merrill Kelly for the first five innings of the game. Luis Gonzalez finally broke up the perfect game with a double in the sixth inning. Still, on second with one out, Gonzalez was doubled off when Mike Yastrzemski lined out to third base.

By that point, San Francisco already trailed 2-0 and there was little hope they would be able to come back. In the bottom of the sixth, Arizona scored three more runs, putting the game out of reach.

Jakob Junis got the start for the Giants and was effective in 4 1/3 innings, limiting the D-backs to three hits, one earned run, and one walk while striking out two. Jarlin Garcia allowed one run, Sam Long was tagged for three runs and Gregory Santos gave up the final two runs.

Sloppy defense, miscues, and a lifeless offense doomed the Giants throughout their latest loss. Austin Slater misplayed a deep fly ball and then later overthrew the cutoff man on a single to center, allowing the trail runner to advance to second base. Joey Bart dropped a pop up behind home plate. Gonzalez reached on a bunt single in the eighth but was quickly picked off first base by Kelly, who has become a nemesis for San Francisco.

After throwing eight shutout innings Monday night, Kelly now has allowed just four runs in 21 1/3 innings pitched over three starts against the Giants this season.

The Giants haven't won a game since the All-Star break and a loss Tuesday night would equal their longest losing streak of the 2022 season (six).

The good news for the Giants is that they have Carlos Rodón and Logan Webb on the mound the next two days in Arizona, so there's a good chance the skid comes to an end before they return home for an eight-game homestand against the Chicago Cubs and Dodgers.
