Giants' Posey has huge lead after first MLB All-Star votes

The Giants have been very diligent about getting Buster Posey extra days off this season, but it's looking extremely likely that the catcher will be busy during the four-day MLB All-Star break.

Posey is way out ahead of the field after the first round of All-Star fan voting, leading St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina by about 240,000 votes. The first phase of voting ends June 24, with the three finalists at each position -- plus nine outfielders -- going to a final vote to determine the starters for the game held July 13 at Coors Field in Denver. Along with Posey and Molina, Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras is in position for the final vote.

Posey is a six-time All-Star but hasn't been chosen since 2018. He's batting .329 with 11 homers for a Giants team that returns home Monday night still in first place in the NL West. A lot of that has to do with Posey and Brandon Crawford, who has had a two-month stretch that should get him MVP consideration but is far back in fan voting.

Crawford is fourth at shortstop in the NL with 122,000 votes. San Diego Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. leads the way with 701,000 votes, followed by the Cubs' Javier Baez (233,000) and Los Angeles Dodgers' Corey Seager (153,000). Crawford needs to catch Baez or Seager to get onto the final ballot.

There are no other Giants with a reasonable shot at getting voted in. Evan Longoria is sixth at third base, although he will miss most, if not all, of the games remaining as fan voting is going on.

The others currently in line to start for the NL are Max Muncy, Ozzie Albies, Kris Bryant, Ronald Acuña Jr., Nicholas Castellanos and Jesse Winker. Pitchers are not included in the voting.

All-Star starters will be revealed July 1 and the full teams will be announced July 4.
