MLB draft grades: Patrick Bailey pick given ‘B' grade by Giants fans

Grading the MLB draft is a useless act for analysts and evaluators.

This is a draft that doesn't compare to that of the NFL or the NBA. Team needs aren't taken into account. Neither is immediate impact. Money even plays a role in many circumstances when it comes to who gets drafted in what spot based on signability.

But the fans deserve a voice. And they certainly made theirs loud and clear after the Giants selected North Carolina State catcher Patrick Bailey with the No. 13 pick in the 2020 MLB on Wednesday. In our poll, the majority (38.4 percent) of Giants fans gave the Bailey pick a B grade.

Many people were surprised when the Giants picked Bailey only two years after making catcher Joey Bart the No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft. But president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi called the pick an "easy decision" for the Giants, and he believes Bailey and Bart can coexist down the road.

The two former college stars had similar stats in the ACC and put up big power numbers. Bart hit 30 homers in his college career, and Bailey had 29 in 13 fewer games.

Giants fans also will love Bailey's art for the bat flip.

It won't be known for years what kind of grade picking Bailey at No. 13 deserves. Giants fans seem quite happy, though, as they look to get back to prominence in the near future.
