Report: Giants one of several teams interested in Haniger

As the Giants look to upgrade defensively this offseason, they reportedly have their eye on free-agent outfielder Mitch Haniger.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal on Sunday wrote that Haniger is "drawing attention" from the Giants and Texas Rangers, along with other clubs.

Haniger hits the open market after five seasons with the Seattle Mariners, though he missed nearly two seasons in 2019 and 2020 due to a ruptured testicle and a torn abductor muscle.

He also missed more than three months this year with a sprained ankle.

The 31-year-old still slashed .246/.308/.429 during the 2022 MLB season with 11 home runs, helping the Mariners snap their 20-year playoff drought and advance all the way to the ALDS.

Haniger's solid season -- and above-average glove in the outfield -- also has drawn interest from the league's pair of Los Angeles teams, the Angels and Dodgers, MLB.com's Jon Morosi reported Monday, citing sources.

The Giants already have Joc Pederson returning to their outfield next year, along with Mike Yastrzemski and LaMonte Wade Jr.

But Haniger would represent a right-handed bat in an outfield full of lefties, though it's unclear where he would fit into the mix should San Francisco prove successful in bringing Aaron Judge to the Bay.

Haniger very well might be the team's backup plan -- but it looks like the Giants have competition there, too.
