Report: Giants among teams interested in free agent Marte

With the MLB hot stove heating up, the Giants already have been linked to a number of the offseason's top free agents.

San Francisco reportedly has interest in both Marcus Semien and Nick Castellanos, but the Giants are one of the teams in on Starling Marte, MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported Friday.

Marte, 33, hit .310 last season with 12 home runs, 55 RBI, 27 doubles, 47 stolen bases and an .841 OPS while splitting his time between the Miami Marlins and Athletics.

Marte is a 10-year MLB veteran who made the All-Star team in 2016 as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. His best season came in 2019 when he hit .295 with 23 home runs, 82 RBI and 25 stolen bases for the Pirates.

Heyman also reported that Marte could have a multi-year deal locked up soon.

Signing Marte would make sense for the Giants as he would give them a right-handed bat who could slot into the middle of the order and play all three outfield positions. His speed would give the Giants another element as San Francisco had trouble manufacturing runs in 2021.

The Giants will prioritize their starting rotation in free agency, but adding Marte would be a big get for Farhan Zaidi.
