Pablo Sandoval appears to injure hamstring, leaves game vs Brewers

SAN FRANCISCO -- For the second time in five games, the Giants lost their starting first baseman to injury.

Pablo Sandoval grabbed at his right hamstring after scoring on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and immediately went back to the clubhouse with trainer Dave Groeschner. Sandoval was replaced at first by Austin Slater in the top of the sixth.

The injury came at the tail end of quite a sequence for Sandoval, who was starting in place of Brandon Belt. He tripled earlier in the inning, driving in a pair of runs. Sandoval didn't get much of a breather. The next batter, Steven Duggar, hit a sacrifice fly.

The Giants lost Belt to a bone bruise on Wednesday in Seattle and Sandoval was set to get most of the playing time during Belt's absence. The Giants expect Belt back after he completes his 10 days on the DL, and he likely won't need a rehab assignment. If Sandoval needs to miss time, they'll likely turn to a couple of young players. Slater played nearly 100 innings at first base in Triple-A this season and started there Thursday night. Ryder Jones can also handle first base.
