SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants prefer to hand their baseball operations job over to someone who previously has held a general manager's job.
One of the best available candidates reportedly is no longer available.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington withdrew his name from consideration for the Giants' and Mets' openings.

Cherington was considered a strong potential fit with the Giants. But Rosenthal wrote that Cherington is happy in his current role as vice president of baseball operations with the Blue Jays and wants to eventually build an organization from the ground up.
That latter part would not fit with what the Giants are seeking.
Team president Larry Baer and executive vice president of baseball operations Brian Sabean believe a strong core already is in place at AT&T Park, and the front office simply needs a fresh perspective from an outsider. They anticipate a new head of baseball operations making changes, but they don't view this as a situation in need of a total ground-up rebuild.
The Giants let go of general manager Bobby Evans during the season's final week and immediately began a search for new leadership. They hope to have a new vice president or GM in place by baseball's GM meetings in early November.
