Report: Giants ‘getting one of the big closers,' meeting Melancon Friday

Closing down ballgames was the primary concern for the 2016 Giants, making the acquisition of back-end bullpen reinforcements one of the front office's primary goals this offseason.

Mark Melancon, one of the top three closers currently available in free agency, is reportedly in San Francisco on Friday for an in-person meeting with the Giants, according to a report from Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan.

"We are getting one of the big closers," a team official reportedly told Yahoo Sports this week.

In addition to Melancon, Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen are the top closer options on the market.

Giants GM Bobby Evans met with Chapman's agent on Wednesday.

Melancon, 31, posted 47 saves last year with a 1.64 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 65 strikeouts and 12 walks over 75 games split between the Pirates and Nationals.
