Report: Giants have ‘expressed interest' in Angels INF Escobar

The Giants are shifting between Conor Gillaspie and Ramiro Pena at third base as Matt Duffy heals on the 15-day DL with a strained left Achilles tendon.

With Duffy out at least two weeks, could the Giants look to upgrade at the hot corner?

The Los Angeles Angels are already 16 games back in the American League West. One player they are getting calls for is infielder Yunel Escobar, and the Giants have "expressed interest" in the veteran according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

Escobar, 33, is hitting .310/.359/.409 with three home runs in 69 games for the Angels this season. He has been used strictly as a third baseman, but has experience at shortstop and second baseman as he was a primary shortstop up until last season.

This season, Escobar is under contract for $7 million and has a $7 million team option next year with a $1 million buyout.

San Francisco placed Duffy on the DL Tuesday after straining his left Achilles Monday in Tampa Bay.

Duffy is hitting .253/.313/.358 with four home runs in 70 games this season, one year after finishing second in National League Rookie of the Year voting.

The Giants are 47-27 headed into Friday night's slate of games, good for six games ahead of the Dodgers in the NL West. With 47 wins, San Francisco also sits at the top of the win column in all of baseball with the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers.
