SAN FRANCISCO — With a motto that "crazier things have happened," the Giants hoped to sneak back into the NL West race with a sweep of the Diamondbacks. Wednesday's game just about put the final nail in the coffin.
The Giants managed just three hits while falling 3-1 in the series finale, snapping a four-game winning streak. With 27 games to go, they trail the Diamondbacks by seven games, the Rockies by six and a half, and the Dodgers by six.

The Giants managed just two hits in 7 2/3 innings facing Zack Godley, who was coming off two rough starts. This time, the pitching couldn't bail the lineup out. Here's what else you need to know ...
—- Dereck Rodriguez had his worst start in more than two months, allowing three earned in five innings. He walked four and struck out three. This was the rookie’s shortest start since June 19. That Marlins game was also the last time Rodriguez allowed more than two runs.
—- Austin Slater had an awkward play in left field for the second straight game. Slater misjudged Steven Souza’s liner to left in the fourth and then fell down as he tried to make a leaping catch. The play went down as an RBI double.
—- Souza’s solo shot in the third snapped a 26-inning scoreless streak for Giants pitchers. It was the first homer allowed by Rodriguez since July 26.

—- Gregor Blanco returned to take Steven Duggar’s roster spot and found himself on the other end of The Gregor Blanco catch. Blanco pinch-hit in the sixth and hit a deep fly ball to right-center, but Souza made a tremendous diving catch to rob him of a triple.
