There are few players in franchise history who fit “Forever Giant” better than Sergio Romo. On Saturday, the Giants made his return to the organization official.
Romo signed a minor league contract with an invite to big league camp in Scottsdale, where he arrived Saturday morning. He will retire as a Giant during the final exhibition game of the spring on Monday, March 27 at Oracle Park.
In a statement announcing the 10-day stint, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said few Giants have ever exemplified the bond that players have with fans more than Romo.
“After all that he accomplished as a Giant from 2008 to 2016, including his huge contributions to the championship teams, it’s a thrill to have him back in a San Francisco uniform,” Zaidi said. “We look forward to having his leadership and presence in camp and are hopeful he can ramp up for game action.”
Romo will retire ranked fifth in franchise history with 515 appearances and first with 27 MLB playoff appearances. He had a 2.58 ERA and 0.96 WHIP as a Giant and ranks seventh in franchise history with 84 saves.

Romo’s final appearance as a professional will come 18 years after he was drafted and 15 after me made his debut for the Giants. He’ll face the Oakland Athletics, one of eight organizations he played for.

The Giants will have Romo in camp for a week as he ramps up for his final outing and makes an important decision: Does he end his career with his signature slider, or with the sneaky fastball that will go down as one of the most famous pitches in World Series history?
