Scully explains Giants fandom, respect for Dodgers' rivals

Vin Scully always will be the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he grew up a fan of their biggest rivals.

The legendary broadcaster explained on Twitter how he became a fan of the Giants as a child growing up in New York, and why his respect for the franchise will last forever despite the fact that he called Dodgers games for 67 years.

"When I was 8 and a half years old, I was leaving grammar school and walking home," Scully said Friday on Twitter. "I went by a laundry and in the window they had the line score of a World Series game. The Giants had lost to the Yankees that day, October the 2nd, 1936, by the score of 18-4. Well, when I saw the Giants having lost by such a heavy score, the little boy that I was, I felt so sorry for them and I became a rabid baseball fan, and especially for the Giants.

"And from October the 2nd, 1936, I had my life dedicated to baseball."

Scully began broadcasting Dodgers game in 1950 and followed the team in their move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles until his final season in the broadcast booth, 2016. Over the years, he saw the team he called games for get in some heated battles with his favorite childhood team.

Life comes full circle, and Scully saw that firsthand as his career came to an end on Oct. 2, 2016, in San Francisco as the Dodgers ended the regular season on the road against the Giants.

"Interestingly enough, on October the 2nd, the last game that I ever broadcast, was 2016," Scully said. "It was the Giants against the Dodgers. It was a remarkable journey and there were so many highlights. The Dodgers gave me a magnificent sendoff, and believe it or not, despite the rivalry, the Giants were terrific when I was at the ballpark for my final game.

"The Giants not only had pictures given out to the fans, they sang 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame.' It was beautiful."

When it comes to Scully, the rivalry is set aside. He's a legend in his own right, and beloved by Giants fans as well.
