What Duane Kuiper misses most about sports during coronavirus hiatus

Editor's note: Like you, NBC Sports Bay Area insiders, reporters and analysts are feeling the sports void during the coronavirus stoppage. They'll share their thoughts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in "What I Miss About Sports." Next up in the series: Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper.

Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper, like all of us, misses sports and everything they provide. But what he misses most isn't between the lines, but actually what transpires before the game starts.

"I'm going to tell you what I miss the most, but it's not the actual games," Kuiper said. "It's the three hours before the game starts. I pull into the parking lot at Oracle Park usually right at 4 o'clock for a 7:15 game or a 6:45 game, it's usually three hours before the first pitch.

"And those three hours, from the time I park my car to when they sing the national anthem, are the three hours I miss most. Because it's in those three hours where you go from seeing all the camera guys, and the ladies that work in the truck, to being in the clubhouse, to being on the field, to visiting with the players, seeing Murph, grabbing a cup of coffee.

"And all of that morphs into standing behind the batting cage, visiting with Mike (Krukow) Jon (Miller) and Dave (Flemming), and then up to the booth, where the four of us are going to have dinner together at some point.

"And Mike and I doing our radio show on KNBR, and then maybe, the thing that I miss most is filling out our scorecards. And I've done it now for 30 years sitting next to Mike, where we fill out the cards, and sometimes we say stuff and sometimes we don't. But it's just the whole process of getting ready to do the game."
