Why Giants raised Oracle Park center field wall to 10 feet last week

The Giants already had made a lot of adjustments to the center field area of Oracle Park during the offseason and coronavirus pandemic shutdown.

But when they returned to San Francisco for their home opener against the San Diego Padres, there was another noticeable adjustment out in center field.

The center field wall, which used to be seven feet tall, has been lengthened to 10 feet tall. The change happened after the Giants' exhibition against the Oakland A's last week.

According to The Bay Area News Group's Kerry Crowley, the adjustment was made to improve the batter's eye at Oracle Park.

The Giants spent months relocating the bullpen mounds from foul territory to behind the center field wall and they finished the construction just before players reported for Summer Camp in early July.

The move was made for the hitters, but this will also benefit Giants pitchers. Now it's not as easy for opposing fly balls to clear that wall.

On the other hand, if you enjoy watching Giants center fielders race back to the wall and rob home runs, that just got a little tougher with a taller wall.
