Klay the runner-up in three-point contest…again

For the third time in four years, Klay Thompson made it to the final round of the three-point contest at NBA All-Star weekend.

For the second time in four years, Klay Thompson fell just short.

Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker bested Thompson 28-25 in the championship round of the league's signature sharpshooting event. Booker's 28 points were the most by a winner since the NBA introduced a full 'moneyball' rack -- with each shot worth two points -- in 2014.

Thompson paced the group with 19 points in the first round to advance to the finals. Booker and Los Angeles Clippers forward Tobias Harris finished right behind him with 17 and 18, respectively, to finish out the championship round.

2018 marked Thompson's fourth consecutive appearance in the contest, and his third overall in the finals. He won the event in 2016.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this article said Klay Thompson was a runner-up in 2017. He was not, and failed to make it to the competition's final round. The article has been updated to reflect that. NBC Sports Bay Area regrets this error.
