Raiders will allow 12-year veteran Jon Condo to leave as free agent

Long snapper Jon Condo and kicker Sebastian Janikowski were the last Raiders left from the Al Davis era.

Janikowski was drafted in 2000. Condo was signed during the 2006 season and became the long snapper the following year.

Both guys will now be allowed to leave as unrestricted free agents. Janikowski was told a few weeks back.

Condo broke news that he would be moving on Wednesday evening on social media.

“Earlier today my agent informed me that I will no longer be an Oakland Raider,” Condo wrote in a Twitter post. “Words can’t express the gratitude I have for the Davis family. They believed in me for 12 years and it was an honor to represent the Raider shield on and off the field. I will always value the meaning of ‘commitment to excellence” and ingrain these characteristics in my children.”

Condo made $1 million last season, and was headed for unrestricted free agency. He’ll be allowed to get there after 12 seasons in silver and black.

This one seemed inevitable. The Raiders signed long snapper Andrew East and Bradley Northnagel to reserve/future contracts. One is typically brought on to spell a starter during the offseason program – East occupied that role in 2016 – but two is unusual.

The Raiders will save a sliver with a less-experienced player, but the team will get younger at the position.

Condo was a former team captain and a steadying locker-room presence throughout the years, and his moving on will impact the fan base more than a typical long snapper.

“Many thanks to the fans for making my time in the silver and black memorable,” Condo wrote. “We shared many great moments that I will cherish forever.”
