Davion, Delly step up after Fox's injury in Kings' win

The Kings were handed a double dosage of adversity in their 115-108 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday at Spectrum Center.

Sacramento lost star point guard De'Aaron Fox to knee soreness after he drew a charge and immediately grabbed his right leg. The Kings were also down 15 points at halftime on the road, so they needed someone to step up if they wanted to get out of the hole.

Enter Davion Mitchell and Matthew Dellavedova. With Fox out, the reserve guards made an impact in different aspects of the game to fill the void.

Mitchell racked up 23 points -- including 10 in the second half -- to fill the scoring shoes with Fox out; meanwhile, Dellavedova provided the leadership on the floor along with three assists as the veteran guard was a plus-10 in eight minutes for the Kings.

"[Coach] Mike Brown told me to stay ready," Mitchell told Kyle Draper and Matt Barnes on "Kings Postgame Live" after the win. "Foxy's playing a really high level right now, All-Star level. He got out. I just tried to play my game, step up, make sure I try to find my teammates. I got to do a better job of that.

"But shout out to Delly, man. Delly is a big vet for us. He came in playing really good men, got people open. He kind of led us to that winning."

Mitchell wasn't alone in praising Dellavedova for providing leadership to keep the Kings mentally in the game, allowing them to overcome the 15-point deficit.

Brown spotlighted the play of the young and veteran guard on both sides of the floor.

"I thought Davion was huge on both sides of the ball," Brown told reporters postgame. "The play that he had at the game, where he turned it over, but he didn't give up and he got the back tap was a big time play.

"We needed that after that turnover. Delly was phenomenal. At the end of the day, you can have all the talent in the world. If you're a winner and you have mental toughness and physical toughness, you can perform for anybody at any level and that's what he brings to the table for us."

The Kings will continue their four-game road trip as they head to South Florida for a matchup against the Miami Heat at FTX Arena on Wednesday.

If Fox can't play, Brown will have to rely on Mitchell, and possibly even Dellavedova, to lead the Kings to their third straight win.
