Recee Fox reveals what De'Aaron is like off the court

Kings star guard De'Aaron Fox is lethal on the court.

Blink and he’ll throw down a thunderous dunk over a 7-footer and put him on highlight reels for all the wrong reasons. Fox will cross up defenders and breeze past them for easy buckets. He has been one of the best NBA players in clutch time this season, slamming the door on opponents and propelling Sacramento into the Western Conference playoff picture.

Off the court, however, it's a whole different story.

"He’s the goofiest guy," Recee Fox said on the latest episode of "Kings Central" to NBC Sports California's Kyle Draper. "That cool, calm, collected killer is not him off the court, which I appreciate. Business is business, and then when he’s off, he’s the goofiest.

"Him and his best friend Reno [Dupor] -- it’s a comedy show at our house."

De'Aaron and Recee first met during the 2018 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, when the Kings guard was entering his second season. They became engaged in September 2020 and officially tied the knot during their wedding in August 2022. The couple is expecting their first child, who they are naming Reign, in February.

Recee, of course, has a long basketball resume of her own. She was named a McDonald's All-American as a high school senior in 2014 and strung together a successful collegiate career at UCLA, Texas Tech and Cal. Recee had a brief stint with the WNBA's Seattle Storm and Team USA before pivoting to roles in player development with the Washington Wizards and Golden State Warriors.

In the "Kings Central" interview, Recee shared De'Aaron is "definitely the clean one" in the household, and the one thing he does that bugs her is when the Kings guard occasionally stays up too late playing video games.

Those late-night gaming sessions don't change his sleeping habits, however.

De'Aaron wears a rose gold Oura ring to track his sleep. Unlike Kings teammate Domantas Sabonis, who told Draper he needs -- at minimum -- a 90-minute nap to feel good on game days, De'Aaron says he feels rejuvenated as more of an efficient napper.

"De’Aaron does this weird thing where he can take a five- to 10-minute nap and be fine," Recee said. "When I’m out, I’m out. But he’s able to close his eyes and be fine."

De'Aaron might be a jokester off the court, but he brings his all-world competitiveness wherever he goes. That includes the game room in the Fox household.

"[Reno] gets the brunt of it," Recee said. "We have an over-the-door hoop. Everything you see on the court, you see in De’Aaron [there]. It’s ridiculous. He hates losing."

"I’m trying to win," De'Aaron responded with a laugh.

"But it’s always like that, it’s something weird with these pros," Recee said. "They’re off. They don’t ever take losing well, which you shouldn’t. But normal people, we’re OK. ‘We’ll get ‘em next time.’ [For De'Aaron], there is no next time. Their day is ruined. And I’ll say, being around pros, that’s how they act. That’s why they’re so good."

De'Aaron is a stone-cold killer between the lines and a jester away from the court. It's just another reason why he, Recee and soon-to-be Reign Fox are three members of Sacramento royalty.
