Kings hire Rockets’ McNair to run basketball operations

The Kings are heading in a new direction.

Houston Rockets assistant general manager Monte McNair has been named the Kings' new general manager and lead basketball executive,the Kings announced Friday. The Athletic's Sham Charania was the first to report the news.

McNair, who has spent the last 13 years working his way up through the Rockets' front office under Daryl Morey, will replace Vlade Divac as the Kings’ front man after the Hall of Fame center stepped away from the team in mid-August.

The Princeton grad began his career in Houston as a basketball operations senior analyst in 2007, after leaving STATS LLC (now Stats Perform). McNair has held the titles of director of basketball operations, vice president of basketball operations and was most recently promoted to assistant GM in 2018.

Known for his ability to translate analytics into on-court solutions, McNair comes from a very successful organization. The Rockets made the playoffs in eight consecutive seasons, advancing to the Western Conference finals twice.
