Kings' success under Dave Joerger stands out among team's recent history

SACRAMENTO -- The Kings keep grabbing headlines. Unlike most years, it’s for their positive play this time around, and not the dysfunction that has plagued the franchise for more than a decade.

First, it was Kevin Durant singing the Kings’ praises on the Bill Simmons podcast. Now, it’s NBC Sports’ Tom Haberstroh highlighting Sacramento and coach Dave Joerger on this week's edition of “The Big Number.”

According to Haberstroh, the Kings have been over .500 just 86 days in the last 10 seasons. By any standard, that is ridiculous.

“Yes, 86 out of 1527 days of the NBA schedule since the 2009-10 season,” Haberstroh said. “86 days is by far the lowest number for any franchise over the last decade.”

According to Haberstroh, the next nearest team is the Nets, who have been over the .500 mark a total of 217 days over the same stretch.

The Kings haven’t made the playoffs since the 2005-6 season under head coach Rick Adelman. Since that time, they have cycled through eight coaches before landing on Dave Joerger.

Joerger has his team playing hard every night. At 14-12, they are one of the best stories of the young NBA season and voices around the league are taking notice.
