Marvin Bagley visits foot specialist, out at least three more weeks

SACRAMENTO -- As the Kings prepare to kick off the stretch run following the NBA All-Star break, they’ll do so without the services of second-year big man Marvin Bagley.

Bagley, who has missed the last 11 games after aggravating his left mid-foot sprain, visited renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Dr. O’Malley confirmed that Bagley had aggravated the injury.

The 20-year-old big man will continue to work with the team’s physicians in coordination with Dr. O’Malley and the Kings will update his medical status in three weeks.

According to the team, "Bagley recently incorporated stationary shooting and partial-weight bearing conditioning activities into his regimen, in addition to ongoing strength work." Those exercises include running in a pool and on a zero-gravity treadmill.

Bagley has played a total of 13 games this season for the Kings. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft, Bagley broke his right thumb in the season opener, which caused him to miss 22 games. He came back in early December, but made it just eight games before injuring his foot the day after Christmas against the Timberwolves.

After an eight-game absence, Bagley returned to the court Jan. 13 against the Orlando Magic. Three games later, Bagley aggravated the injury against the Utah Jazz, but went on to play 38 minutes the next game against the Miami Heat.

The Kings shut him down after the loss in Miami and the team has not ruled out shutting down the 6-foot-11 power forward for the remainder of the season.

When Bagley has played, he’s been effective for the Kings, averaging 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds in just 25.7 minutes per game. It’s a disappointing turn of events for a talented young player. He’s played in a total of 75 games in his two seasons in the league and there is no guarantee that total will increase this season.
