NBA rumors: Kings, others have ‘preliminary interest' in Kosta Koufos

Veteran center Kosta Koufos is an unrestricted free agent, but his time with the Sacramento Kings might not be over.

Yahoo's Chris Haynes reported Sunday, citing league sources, that Koufos has received "preliminary interest" from the Kings, Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks.

Koufos spent the past four seasons with the Kings, but his role diminished last season as the team decided to feature their young big men. After playing in at least 71 games in each of his first three seasons in Sacramento, Koufos played just 42 games during the 2018-19 season. In four seasons with the Kings, Koufos averaged 6.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in 18.3 minutes.

In a recent interview with NBC Sports California's James Ham, the 30-year-old Koufos believes he still can contribute to an NBA team.

“I’ve been in the league for 11 years," Koufos said. "I’ve started a numerous amount of games, and when given time, I can put up numbers.”

Koufos didn't rule out a return to the Kings, but he understands he'll have to wait until they've checked every box before they pursue him.

“You keep your options open no matter what, I believe in that,” Koufos told Ham.

If Koufos were to rejoin the Kings for the 2019-20 season, he'd be behind Marvin Bagley, Harry Giles and free agent signing Dewayne Dedmon on the depth chart. But his presence would be good for the Kings' young frontcourt.
