As the Kings continue to rebuild ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season, they may have to deal with another roadblock along the way.
This time, it affected the search for their next head coach.
Sacramento announced the hiring of Mike Brown as the Kings' head coach on May 8. But Brown could be in Sacramento for a lot longer than Kings general manager Monte McNair.

And that apparently was viewed as a problem for several coaching candidates.
Many candidates during the search were concerned about the lack of commitment to the front office and their potential partnership in the future, The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported, citing sources.
Brown signed a four-year deal with the Kings, meanwhile McNair reportedly is entering the final season of his contract and there haven’t been any talks about a possible extension, Amick reported.
McNair, who is already under a lot of pressure to snap the Kings’ 16-year playoff drought, faces even more heat in what could be his final year with the organization.

Sacramento hired McNair to replace the departed Vlade Divac in September 2020. He was previously the Houston Rockets' assistant general manager.
While McNair’s contract status is a bit of a blur, Alvin Gentry’s new role has been finalized.
Gentry, who finished last season as interim Kings coach, has joined the Kings in a full-time front office role as Vice President, Basketball Engagement, sources told The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Amick.

For now, McNair is focused on the NBA Draft Lottery Tuesday night when the Kings will learn which pick they will get.
According to odds from the NBA, Sacramento has a 7.5 percent chance of getting the No. 1 overall pick.
