Source: Catanella set to join McNair's staff with Kings

New Kings general manager Monte McNair has plenty of work to do to fill out his staff in Sacramento, but he already has one position filled. According to a league source, assistant GM and salary cap expert Ken Catanella is expected to stay on with the Kings.

Catanella joined Vlade Divac's staff in May of 2016 after holding assistant GM and director of basketball operations titles with the Detroit Pistons from 2011-2016. During his time in Detroit, he worked with the Kings' newly anointed Chief Strategy Officer Joe Dumars.

Since the departure of Divac and assistant GM Peja Stojakovic, Catanella has been working behind the scenes to help build out the Kings' draft board and strategy for an uncertain offseason.

During his time in Sacramento, Catanella has played a major role in the Kings' salary cap management and he's helped the franchise retain cap flexibility over the last four years.

From short term deals with team options to declining scale contracts for players like Buddy Hield and Harrison Barnes, Catanella's work has been notable, despite the Kings' overall record.

In addition to his time with the Kings and Pistons, Catanella has worked in the NBA league office, as well as with the then-New Jersey Nets.
