NYRA suspends Baffert from entering horses in Belmont Stakes

Trainer Bob Baffert has been suspended by New York racing officials from entering Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit and other horses in the upcoming Belmont Stakes on June 5 or races at other major state tracks.

The suspension comes after Medina Spirit tested positive for a banned substance following its Derby victory.

The New York Racing Association said that it took into account the probe into Medina Spirit's Derby win and other horses trained by Baffert that have failed drug tests recently.

"In order to maintain a successful thoroughbred racing industry in New York, the NYRA must protect the integrity of the sport for our fans, the betting public and participants," NYRA President and CEO Dave O'Rourke said in a statement Monday.

Baffert had not yet committed to entering any horses in the third leg of the Triple Crown but had many in consideration for other races.

Medina Spirit and Concert Tour finished third and ninth, respectively, in the Preakness last Saturday.
