2019 NFL Draft grades: How Raiders turned heads at top of first round

Share

The Raiders turned heads with their first and last picks in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Silver and Black selected Clemson edge rusher Clelin Ferrell -- whom they say they rated just as highly as No. 2 pick Nick Bosa -- No. 4 overall, with defensive players such as Josh Allen and Ed Oliver still on the board. Then, with their ninth and final selection, Oakland drafted another defensive end: Prairie View A&M's Quinton Bell. The seventh round of a draft is littered with guys few outside of a scouting department have heard of, but Bell managed to be obscure enough that Mayock's old colleagues at NFL Network didn't have tape on him for their draft show.

The Raiders lacked pass-rushing prowess last season, and addressed it this year with Ferrell, Bell and fifth-round pick Maxx Crosby (defensive end). But how did the rest of their draft turn out?

Here's a list of each of the Raiders' picks, and grades for their 2019 draft class from writers around the country.

What they're saying: "Turns out Jon Gruden's championship experience and Mike Mayock's years of ace draft analysis work pretty well together in rebuilding a roster. They went right down the line in filling key holes and finding good value with Ferrell, Jacobs, Abram, Mullen, Moreau and Renfrow."

What they're saying: "I think the Raiders added a ton of necessary talent in this draft—but with the capital they had, that’s to be expected. Again, the question is whether they could have done even more."

Grade: B+
What they're saying: "Ferrell was the next best pure front-four pass rusher on the board after No. 2 overall pick Nick Bosa, but he came off the board well before most people expected."

What they're saying: "So why just a B-? Welp, it's not Mayock's fault ... but at the end of the day, these players must still prove they're worth the divorces from Mack and Cooper — and maybe the additional first-rounder waiting in the 2020 draft will better make the justification."

Grade: B-
What they're saying: "Ferrell is a risky pick, as the Raiders passed on Josh Allen. Abram is definitely the best safety in this draft. And Jacobs is a legit running back. But that Ferrell pick ..."

Washington Post

What they're saying: "The Raiders’ roster is better than it was before the draft. But it remains worse than it was before they traded Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper."
