Derek Carr's rehab on track, ‘maybe even ahead of schedule'

Derek Carr’s rehab is going well. The Raiders quarterback had surgery to repair a fibula broken in Week 16 versus Indianapolis, and has made great progress in recovery.

Head coach Jack Del Rio confirmed that point on Thursday afternoon at the NFL Scouting Combine, stating his quarterback is on the mend without confirming if he’d be available to participate fully in the team’s offseason program.

“He’s doing well,” Del Rio said. “We still have a couple months before we crank it up. He’s in good spirits and everything that I’ve seen and heard is that he’s on track, or maybe even ahead of schedule. We expect a complete recovery, and for him to have no issues.”

Left tackle Donald Penn said last week that Carr was nearing 100 percent. Carr wouldn’t quantify his health at this stage, but remains confident he’ll be ready soon.

“We’re really close,” Carr said in an interview with Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Radio. “I feel good, but there’s a bit of the process left to go. I won’t put a number on it, but I can assure you I’ll be back 100 percent ready to go. We’re almost there.”

Carr wants to be a full participant in the team’s offseason, but will take a conservative approach to recovery in an attempt to avoid setbacks. It isn’t vital Carr participate in every OTA, only that he’s healthy as the season gets close.

“My goal is to do everything,” Carr said. “I believe that I can, and will really soon. Now it’s up to the team and myself getting together to (formulate) the best plan. There’s nothing holding me back physically. We’re just trying to be smart with the way we do it. You don’t want anything to push it back a couple weeks just because we rushed a certain thing.

“We’ve taken this process as slow as possible ever since our team got knocked out of the playoffs. We’re going to continue to do that, but I fully expect to be out there with my teammates when everything starts up.”
