Injury report: Raiders C Hudson returns to practice

ALAMEDA -– Raiders center Rodney Hudson missed Sunday’s game versus Minnesota nursing a sprained right ankle.

Looks like that might be the only one. The top-flight offensive lineman returned to practice Thursday, his first workout since getting hurt late in a Nov. 8 loss at Pittsburgh.

It’s also a major step towards a return to action, which now seems likely heading into the upcoming game at Detroit.

Hudson took first-team reps in Thursday practice portions open to the media, and moved around without hindrance. He was limited in that session, with a Friday walk-thru practice ahead.

Hudson made a case to return against Minnesota, but backup Tony Bergstrom started instead and played well.

“He called a good game,” offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said.

Getting Hudson back is a real boon. He has been playing as well as anyone in the NFL, making smart protections calls while showing athleticism unusual for a center. The Raiders frequently run in gaps he creates, something they didn’t do very often while he was out.

Safety Charles Woodson returned to practice after his customary Wednesday off. Tight end Lee Smith remains out with a wrist injury. He had a brace on it Thursday in the locker room, though he was not sporting a cast of any kind.

Linebacker Neiron Ball remains out for another week, as expected, with a knee injury.
