NFL rumors: Jon Gruden fires Raiders strength coach Tom Shaw

Jon Gruden continues to reshape the staff around him, even before the first season of his second Raiders coaching stint ends.

Gruden fired strength and conditioning coach Tom Shaw earlier this week, and had an administrator tell him the news, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday, citing league sources.

Before coming to Oakland, Shaw worked with the New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots, and ran his own training facility in Orlando.

Shaw is believed to be the fifth strength coach fired by Gruden in his 12 years as an NFL coach, Schefter noted. So whatever Gruden is looking for in a strength coach, he evidently isn’t finding it.

Shaw’s firing comes two weeks after the Raiders let general manager Reggie McKenzie go. Gruden, who was given a 10-year contract to become the Raiders’ coach, reportedly has final say on all personnel matters, so replacing McKenzie with an experienced GM could be difficult.

Schefter reported that former New York Giants GM Jerry Reese turned down the chance to interview for the Raiders job. Reese was the Giants' GM from 2007 to 2017, when the team won two Super Bowls.
